Monsoon Skincare Tips for Clear and Oil-Free Skin

The heat of the indian summer is highly intense. And we all wait for the monsoon that brings a sigh of relief. It comes with an earthy scent and a fresh, cool breeze. However, it also brings a common skincare challenge for those struggling with oily and acne-prone skin.

Because of this struggle of keeping our skin acne-free, the monsoon season feels a little challenging. The higher humidity levels during this season make our skin’s oil glands work harder, which can result in clogged pores, extra shine, and a dull-looking complexion. However, with a few simple adjustments to your skincare routine, you can keep your skin looking fresh, matte, and glowing all through the rainy season.

Let’s explore a dermatologist-approved skincare guide specifically designed for Indian skin types dealing with the added humidity and oil buildup during the monsoon season.

1. Cleansing! Your favourite routine!

During the monsoon, your skin produces more oil. And makeup, dirt, and other pollutants on the skin clog skin pores. This combination can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Go for the foaming or gel-based cleanser

Choose a gentle foaming or gel-based cleanser that removes excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Look for ingredients like Salicylic acid (in low concentration), Tea tree oil, and Niacinamide.

Just cleanse the face once or twice a day to avoid over-drying the skin. Twice a day cleansing is enough, cos when we cleanse the skin more often, it produces more oil to compensate.

2. Do you exfoliate?

Here are the reasons why exfoliation helps, but when done right, not rough. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and keeps pores unclogged — something oily skin struggles with during monsoon. But harsh scrubs or daily exfoliation can lead to microtears and sensitivity, especially in humid weather.

Go for a mild exfoliant once or twice a week. You can choose between Chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid or lactic acid (gentle and effective) or a fine-grain physical scrub with soft, round beads — if your skin prefers it.

Always remember to apply moisturiser after exfoliating your skin.

3. Skipping Moisturiser? — Instead, Choose the Right One

A common myth among those with oily skin is that moisturisers will make things worse. But the truth is — when your skin feels dehydrated, it can produce even more oil to compensate.

The trick is to pick a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Go for gel-based moisturisers and ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or glycerin.  This keeps your skin balanced, hydrated, and matte, not shiny.

4. Heavy Makeup ≠ Breathable Skin

Heavy makeup causes clogged pores faster than you think. If you're sweating or out in humid air, there is a high chance of getting clogged pores and hence a bacterial infection. Opt for minimal, breathable makeup. Use a tinted moisturiser or BB cream instead of heavy foundation. Go for matte-finish products that are oil-free.

And always remove makeup properly before bed, no matter how tired you are. Micellar water is a gentle cleanser that would clean 100% of your makeup, without rubbing your skin harshly.

And best, if you give a pause and give your skin makeup-free days to breathe.

5. Myth: Don't need sunscreen on cloudy days

Many skip sunscreen during the monsoon, assuming clouds block UV rays. In reality, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds, which means sun damage can still occur. So go for sunscreen with having non-comedogenic formula and with more than 30+ SPF for best protection.

6. Habits Beyond Products

Good skin doesn’t just come from bottles — it’s also about lifestyle habits that support skin health round the clock. Here are the ways you can keep a check:

  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to flush toxins and help balance oil production from within.
  2. Change pillowcases regularly: Sweat, oil, and bacteria can build up quickly in humid weather.
  3. Tie your hair away from your face, especially if it’s oily or styled with products — this prevents pore clogging.
  4. Avoid touching your face often, as this transfers dirt and bacteria, increasing the chance of breakouts.
  5. Getting drenched in a spontaneous rain shower may feel romantic, but rainwater — especially in cities — often contains pollutants that can irritate your skin.

Final thoughts:

Monsoon skincare is all about balance. With the right routine — one that’s light, hydrating, and cleansing — you can enjoy the rains without worrying about oily skin or clogged pores. Remember, your skin doesn’t need complicated steps, just consistent and thoughtful care.
